Cityfella
Big city fella, Born and Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. Lived in New York for nearly four years(a part time New Yorker). I have lived in the Sacramento area since 1993.
Like many family we moved to Sacramento to own a home, I didn’t want to move in a bedroom community. The biggest adjustment was the heat, the second were the people. Unlike San Francisco, people are approchable here. We settled in South Natomas, and while I liked the location and diversity.
After moving here, I found the entire city bland, there was little night life and if I wanted to see people with blue hair , I had to hang out at the Alhambra Safeway. In 1993, the city was very limited…and I was clear, once my children became adults, it was back to San Franciso or New York.
In the last few years ,the city matured, today there are many options. Midtown and dowtnown have exploded. No longer do I go into a panic when a friend visits from out of town, today a lot of my friends are amazed… today I hear, “I didn’t know Sacramento had all this going on!
While the city is slowly becoming a true urban center. The city suffers from low self-esteem in my opinion, locals have few positive words to say about their hometown. There is little pride here. Sacramentians often refer to their city as a cowtown.
Sacramento is a fantastic place, there is something for everyone. There are many larger cities who do not have our art scene. Theeater, is huge here, for slightly more than a movie ticket one can enjoy the magic of live theater. From Placerville, to Roseville, theater is alive. So is Ballet. Downtown and midtown is alive with dance clubs. Miles of bike trails, two river, outdoor recreation.
POLITICS
I have always had an interest in politics. At 15, I was elected to the youth commission which its similar to the city council.. There was a time in this country when you could be drafted for the war at 18 and not allowed to vote. I protested against this and the Vietnam war . Campaigned for George Mc Govern and precent worked all while I was in high school.
Ran and held office in college. Involved in many grass roots organizations, included one that limited the height of skyscrapers in San Francisco. If I lived in any city more than a week, I got Involved .
I have voted for candidates in the Green Party, voted Democratic and Republican. I could be called a conservative-middle of the road-liberal. I wish more people would read, people tend to quote TV and radio pundits often forgetting they are paid entertainment.
VISIONARIES NEEDED
The City of Sacramento is in desperate need of a visionaries, in its leadership and development. Bold individuals who are ready to take this city to the next level. Many many years ago, there were visionaries, the planted the trees we now enjoy in midtown. They closely developed the old neighborhoods, Oak Park, Land Park and its great park,and McKinnely Park in East Sacramento.
The lack of vision is clear, the focus in this city is limited to K Street and Arco Arena. The fabric of this city is similar to a loose stitched patched quilt. as there are many gaping holes. Neighberhoods are abandon and often left to rot as the city chase new revenue from the new subdivisons.
The last major gesture, was during the late Mayor Joe Serna tenure, when Packard Bell relocated from southern California.
Natomas, was going to be different, but the city has altered the plan.. With gaping holes, unfinished parks and an unclear future.
Leadership in the city, is similar to the new parks, uninspired. The cities history is clear, all one has to look is to the neighberhoods and parks. Sacramento great parks,McKinnly and Land Park where built over sixty years ago and its seems thats when the creative switch was turned off.
There are a few visionaries ,David Taylor and Associates who added to the skyline and help bring people downtown. The other visionary is John Saca, who’s two 53 story condo’s ,may have changed the cities image.
Sacramentians deserve better than what they have or had. We need bold leaders who can repair the lose pieces and leaders that can inspire and take this city to the next level.

I believe that tolerance is the key, and that begins with friends and family.
Life is short, take time to admire and enjoy the simple things..,……
