There was inspired (or just dumb luck) casting. David Cassidy,Meatloaf,Gary Busey,Lisa Rinna,Dionne Warwick, Martlee Matlin LiL Jon and John Rich and others injected much needed life into the stale reality show.

2012 Celebrity Apprentice Cast

On Sunday’s season’s premier, it was the men vs the women. The task was sandwiches, the team that generated the most money for charity, got to go to bed early.

The men’s team “Unanimous” picked Paul Teutul, Sr. of “American Chopper to be project manager. The woman’s team, “Forte” Venezuelan actress and fashion model Patricia Velasquez volunteered to be project manager. Paul set the bar high saying he wanted to raise a half a million dollars for his charity “Make a Wish” . Patricia’s charity is the Wayuu Taya Foundation. Which ever team had the best sales received the other teams cash.

On the men’s team Penn Jillette worked his assets off juggling fire outside, inside Clay Aiken was aggressively asking for cash inside. As the milk separated, the take charge people rose and the other followed. Paul is old school, his no coddling-tell it like he’s see’s didn’t wear well on some of him team.

Meanwhile, the ladies were having their own issues. Victoria Gotti, and Teresa Guidice spent time of their cells , as their teammates worked. Victoria Gotti (John’s daughter) is the woman they seem to fear. Lisa Lampaneilli worried about finding a horse’s head in her bed,. While everyone on her team was making sandwiches, Victoria got there when she felt like it….(no one said a word)

Despite his Jilllette’s best efforts, the restaurant grew quiet. Across town, the women were kicking ass, with people paying thousands for their sandwiches At one point Russell Simmons with 10 grand in hand, wanted a vegan sandwich.. With all the sandwiches pre-made, Victoria and Cheryl sprang into action and chich ching, Mr Simmons had his sandwich.

La Don, told the teams to bring their best sandwich to the Rachel Ray Show, the winning team would get a bonus. The winner would be revealed in the board room.

Listen and Learn

With Paul saying he had the connections to make the half million dollars happen, the rest of his team turned their cells off . Some of the women called their connections. But most have seen the show and were saving their high roller connections, for another day.

The Board Room

The board room is where it all happens, betrayal, ego and honor, where dog eats dogs Your favorite celebrities doing what ever it takes to live another day. Forget the tasks and the whispers, its the board room! While the show and its format has grown stale, the board room still entertains. Its the room where you can watch your favorites squirm.

Who is the weakest player? Patrica, the project manager said, former Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza was the hardest worker and said supermodel Cheryl Tiegs and Victoria Gotti were the weakest players. Of course you know M’s Gotti wasn’t gonna sit there and be silent. But Patricia (she ain’t scared of no Gotti) pointed out how late and distracted she was… (take dat Gotti!)

On the men team,Paul called Penn Jillette the teams “MVT”( most valuable teammate) and George (Star Trek)Takai and Arsenio ( “yes! where the hell has he been!) Hall the weakest player. Mr Takai did not have his stun gun and didn’t appreciate Paul calling him meek , and defended himself to the Trumpster!

Rachael Ray, liked the men’s sandwich and the men received a $35,000 bonus….

The women raised an impressive $126,000 the most ever in the history of CA.

How so nevah! the men raised $367,000. Including one check for $305,000 from one of Paul’s friends. Nearly a half a million dollars goes to Make A Wish! (don’t mess with Paul)

Time for one of the ladies to go home…… singer Debbie( Shake Your Love) Gibson picked Cheryl to go home. Actress Aubrey O’Day picked M’s Gotti. Actress and multi-Grammy winner Tia Carrere (trying to be a bad ass) volunteered herself to go into the final board room meeting-”el stupido” (not smart as the Trumpster has a good memory) and said she wanted M’s Gotti gone as well..

Note: Cheryl said she brought in big money, Patricia basically said, I don’t think so bitch. I know who and what…which silenced Cheryl.

Patricia brought Cheryl and M’s Gotti to the board room. Cheryl looked like she was about the fall apart and in the end the former supermodel was the first fired.

A tearful Cheryl said “She didn’t seem to mind anyway, saying it wasn’t really a good fit for her”

The Supermodel found her Mojo on Wendy Williams

After a tearful departure, the supermodel struck back on “The Wendy Williams Show” Saying she wanted to show America a different side of the Celebrity Apprentice. In firing her, (instead of M’s Gotti)” Trump was trying to protect his own head with that move”

“I’ve built 12 companies in my life” I’ve been on the cover of Time magazine three times, not for my beauty but because what I was doing was newsworthy around the world. I’ve worked with teams all my life, but I’ve been nice and I’ve been kind. I wanted to bring something to “Celebrity Apprentice ” to let America know that you don’t have to be back-stabbing and mean-spirited in order to challenge”

Someone really likes herself

Last season’s Celebrity Apprentice (hope he cut NeNe Leakes a Big Check) was a must see. This year cast including another Bravo Housewife Teresa Giudice, is a wait and see. Perhaps, Teresa will flip the table in the board room.

The social network site kicks up so much anxiety and embarrassment for me. But that doesn’t mean I want to quit it

A few days ago, my friend Elizabeth posted an item to Facebook. I wanted to comment but held back, though not exactly because I had plenty of work to do. Instead I sent her a text: “Sometimes do you want to say something or post something or like something on FB, but then you think of all those unanswered emails and texts and silence yourself, so people won’t see you ‘wasting’ time when you could be responding to them?”

“Sometimes?” she replied.

“It’s called Twilt, that feeling,” I answered, laughing, having coined the term on the spot.

Twilt (n): the particular brand of guilt or self-reproach that results from posting, liking or commenting on items on Facebook or Twitter while simultaneously not responding to emails, text messages, phone calls or other types of personal communication with the knowledge or anxiety that the specific message senders will notice your public offerings and question your lack of private ones. Twilt, while related, is not the same as the guilt that results from general Internet-specific procrastination such as browsing blogs or online shopping, which, though it may result in its own brand of self-disgust, generally has no public shame component.

Adam Zagajewski, in his essay “The Shabby and Sublime,” says that the poetry of recent years is “marked by a disproportion … between powerful expressions of the inner life and the ceaseless chatter of self-satisfied craftsmen.” The same could be said for Facebook updates, our contemporary confessional. I have eaten the plums in the refrigerator, and they were yummy. Facebook is bad for me because I not only embarrass myself but I keenly feel the embarrassment of others whose lack of discretion, as I perceive it, I quietly judge and am embarrassed by all the same.

When someone starts a conversation with me on Facebook, in public, I’m mortified. There’s a message function for that! I have email and a cellphone. Let me respond when I can, away from the watch of hundreds. Sometimes I disable my Wall so people can’t write things there, until someone points it out and I feel guilty that I’ve done this so I change it back. I don’t like to talk on the phone in public and when a friend speaks too loudly in a cafe I am nervous that someone will overhear our conversation. At home I don’t like the sensation of my husband overhearing me order pizza, let alone having more sensitive conversations with friends. I have never been one to kiss and tell, and I like to keep my private life private. Why I have a Facebook account at all still perplexes me. I like the idea of seeing what’s going on, but I don’t want to always be a part of it. I don’t want to not be a part of it either. I want to swoop in and swoop out. But Facebook doesn’t allow for inconsistency without amplifying it, a constant record of our obsessions and our contradictions to the point of caricature.

The conversations between couples embarrass me the most, whether they’re sentimental or self-referential. It’s not that you live with that person and somehow don’t need electronic communication — I often text my husband across the table at a bar to make a snarky comment, or sometimes I send ridiculous things to the online printer in his office just to be impish. But it’s done in private, between us. That’s the point. It’s something about the relationship having a public facade so contrived and self-aware that makes my eyes water with shame. We all have facades and personas, of course, that are not Internet confined. Game faces. Once, at a reading, a poet thanked his wife so gushingly that I whispered to my friend, “That guy is totally having an affair.” I didn’t know a thing about him. But it turns out, I was right. Maybe the wife requested the shout-out, but if I were his wife I would have smiled at the crowd and taken flight. Up, up and away.

Do you remember “This American Life’s” 2001 episode aboutSuperpowers, which poses the question: If you could have a superpower, would you choose Flight or Invisibility? My first reaction was and remains, flight. To fly! I’m petite and have spent a lifetime trying to fight invisibility, being intellectually overlooked, or feeling insignificant (this is not simply a result of my size but an entire slew of issues that would benefit from Lacanian psychoanalysis, which if I had I’d have to talk about in my status updates). I still have dreams where I’m flying, frequent dreams, and when I wake up I feel inexplicably happy. When I fly in my dreams, I don’t sputter or start or anxiously hover. I soar, I glide, and it’s fluid, like a manta ray moving through water. When I fly in my dreams I am all grace. My desire for flight would get me places faster, and in style.

But maybe my desire for flight is a sort of conditional invisibility; the idea of flight not only as the act of flying but the act of fleeing. I want to be part of the scene but to float somehow above it, to engage in the action but then be able to gracefully exit. I want to swoop on in and then glide away. But I want to be seen, for sure, and present. I just don’t want to have to stay, and I certainly don’t want anyone to comment on it.

It is also, of course, part of being a writer, to be part of a scene but also removed. Writing is about observation, but if I observe and immediately state then I’ve lost it, released it. The essay allows an expression of doubt but the Facebook update or conversation has a sort of self-satisfied glibness to it. It doesn’t invite dialogue but somehow challenges it. There is also the lack of control. It could go anywhere. Someone could say something too revealing or racist or just plain idiotic, and there it is, linked to your name. It is not a place for the anxious, Facebook.

And there is the difference of stance. An essay is an attempt at dialogue but a status update is a solicitation; the first is a meaningful hesitation or an assertive pronouncement, a languorous dip in a warm sea or a fast-paced race in a pool. But the essay swims all the same. A Facebook update is a haphazard nose dive into a near-empty watering hole. What if I break my neck? Will someone find me if my head is bleeding? If I post and no one comments, do I exist?

The comparison between the two forms needn’t be made; we know the difference, yet it might explain my relative comfort, even ease, with the personal essay and my fear of any public sort of dialogue. Do I want to be invisible or do I want to fly? Although the personal is intimate there is also the artifice of distance. When I fly in my dreams I can see myself flying while being aware of my place on the ground. Philip Lopate argues that a good essayist must see oneself from the ceiling, must turn oneself into a character. He is not advocating a “self-absorbed navel-gazing” but instead “a release from narcissism,” an ability to be able to “see yourself in the round.”

I admit I am often self-amused by my status updates (what else are they for?), but I am rarely satisfied with them. In the rare case I am amused with myself when writing anything, that to me is a sure sign that it’s going to need a very careful edit, or that it’s garbage.

What I love best about that episode of “This American Life” is the moving analysis at the end, immediately after several of the show’s guests comment on what it means to want invisibility or flight. John Hodgman reflects:

Flight and invisibility touch a nerve. Actually, they touch two different nerves, speak to very different primal desires and unconscious fears … In the end, it’s not a question of what kind of person flies and what kind of person fades. We all do both. … At the heart of this decision, the question I really don’t want to face, is this. Who do you want to be, the person you hope to be, or the person you fear you actually are?

Am I becoming someone on Facebook or am I trying to escape her? I’m happy my partner is not on Facebook because I am spared that public embarrassment, of people wishing us happy anniversary or the pressure to comment, or not comment, on his witticisms or offerings: J. just made fabulous butternut squash ravioli! From scratch! Natalie likes this. And then he would like my liking, and another friend would find it cute, and like it too, and no one would know that we spent the last hour fighting because I overloaded the dryer and almost burned down the house.

I wouldn’t mind if he joined Facebook, though, because he is the face man of our relationship and it would take some of the completely imagined but hugely felt pressure off me. (“Could you please like so-and-so’s photos of her daughter’s dance recital?”) If we had a band, he’d be the lead singer and I’d be the bassist, hiding behind my hair. (No, not the drummer! No one sees the drummer!) The bassist can look up and make eye contact with the crowd for a moment and the crowd will go wild. They don’t expect it but they hope for it all the same. The face man: He has to be on all the time. It’s his job to be on.

Do you remember the scene in “Sex in the City” where Carrie, upon receiving an email, ducks underneath her desk and shrieks, Oh my god, can he see me? A decade later it seems charming, like a text message from our grandmother. Yet the anxiety remains. Now, I suffer from what is surely a new psychological disorder: a DSM-IV classifiable paranoia that all my personal conversations are somehow being broadcast on Twitter. Is there a word for that?

Her work has appeared in Tin House, Ninth Letter, Granta Online, and The O. Henry Prize Stories 2010, and she is a contributing editor for the online journal

Logic Smogic! Consumer Reports and all the leading Audio/Video magazines say’s based on my room size I shouldn’t buy a TV larger than a 46 inch set. A screen too large could cause eye strain and headaches.

Hell, I’m a man, when it come to size we want the biggest. It’s like a car, yes a six cylinder is adequate and it will get the job done-how nice. But we want the HEMI, eight cylinders of rumbling power. Sure, its gets 2 miles to the gallon and you’ll need a small business loan to buy gas. It’s about pride, power and glory! (excuse me, as I wipe a tear from my eye)

No man runs up to your car and say’s ooh, you have six? It’s damm man, you got a friggin HEMI!

SO UNDERSTAND AND RECOGNIZE! I can’t buy a 46, my fragile male ego wont allow it. My children have fifties, Heck, my daughter has a forty something in her bedroom.

I want immediate blindness, as you enter my postage stamp of an apartment, you’ll need sunglasses. I want ooooh’s . I wanna hear, oh its so big! (so few of us hear that without uncontrollable giggling) Look at that picture!

“I wanna say to my clearly envious visitors , ohhh its nothing, just something to watch the news”

Last fall, a friend invited a few of us to watch the 49er’s in 73 inches of half time wonder. The TV was one of those rear projection TV‘s from the rent a center. The TV sucked big time, the picture looked blurry, from the side, so we had to sit in a small section of the sofa to properly see the TV, there we where crammed, on this small section of this large sofa, unable to reach for snacks or drinks. No one returned during the playoffs.

Lawd, I want one of the larger, LCD,LED or Plasma… with a good bright and sharp picture. and if you can delivered it before the Oscars or NBA playoffs it would be appreciated…

and remember, ooohs and ahhhs……

See Lawd, Double! Double! if I get anything smaller, my kids will snicker, please…its about HONOR!

Two activists, including Safe Ground Sacramento president John Kraintz (right), protest lack of access to clean water and sanitation for the region’s homeless individuals at City Hall.

The disbanding of Tent City 2, threats with Tasers, no access to clean water or sanitation, a dramatic rise in illegal-camping citations—Sacramento’s homeless individuals say they’re under attack. And according to new reports by Sacramento County rangers—and even the United Nations’ Council on Human Rights—they aren’t exaggerating.

In January, for instance, the county’s chief ranger reported that citations for illegal camping shot up nearly 2,000 percent in 2011 over the previous year. County spokesman Zeke Holst explained that most of these citations occurred near Discovery Park and eastward along the American River.

Beginning last October, city of Sacramento police officers began regularly joining county rangers on patrols of this area. This has resulted in a considerable upswing in the number of $221 illegal-camping tickets: 33 were issued between July and September of 2011, but then 332 were issued between October and December. The report notes that only 29 citations were issued in 2010.

Chief county ranger Stan Lumsden says the huge increase in written citations is “basically the difference between doing [one’s job] and not doing it,” adding that staff finally has the time to enforce the no-camping ordinance and that it’s not a new “crackdown” against homelessness.

Meanwhile, homeless advocate John Kraintz, president of Safe Ground Sacramento, told the city council on January 24 that campers who were ejected from the former Tent City 2 site near North 10th Street are now being threatened with Tasers.

“This business about using Tasers to influence people on the river,” Kraintz told city council, “this is not a good plan.”

Both city and county officials insist Tasers are not being used against homeless persons. “We don’t threaten people with Tasers,” city of Sacramento Sgt. Andrew Pettit told Sacramento News and Review. He says officers are instructed to only display or “arc” their Tasers if there is a combative or physical threat, or during riot or crowd control.

County rangers, meanwhile, only recently were given Tasers, on February 1, according to spokesman Holst. Their policy for use is similar to that of the city police.Either way, Kraintz said there needs to be a de-escalation of patrols and citations. “They’ve got nowhere else to go,” he reminded.

The international community, meanwhile, has taken notice. A United Nations representative who visited Sacramento last year sent a letter this past week to Mayor Kevin Johnson’s office. It condemned homeless living conditions, arguing that homeless people are “increasingly being criminalized” and urged the city to provide access to 24-hour public-restroom facilities and clean water (see “Cruel, inhuman, degrading,” SN&R Frontlines, March 17, 2011).

Johnson spokesman Joaquin McPeek insisted that “no one is more frustrated” than the mayor when it comes to homelessness in the city. “Our community has made incredible strides in the past few years by moving over 2,300 individuals into permanent housing,” he stated. “But there’s more we need to do.”

The U.N. report describes how one Safe Ground homeless man, “Tim,” engineered a sanitation-waste system for fellow campers. Each week, he collected “bags full of human waste, which varied in weight between 130 to 230 pounds, and [hauled] them on his bicycle a few miles to a local public restroom” for disposal.

This past Tuesday morning, after the report’s release, more than a dozen homeless persons marched in light rain to City Hall for a protest and press conference. They chanted “sanitation, not discrimination” and also brought along “Tim’s” makeshift toilet: an 8-foot-tall tent with a plastic seat inside along with a mountain bike with metal baskets filled with bags for human waste.

Safe Ground’s Kraintz reminded that his organization has offered to pay for clean water and sanitation. But city leaders have rebuffed him, including Councilman Steve Cohn, arguing that the encampment was not sustainable or clean. “But there’s still the sanitation problem. There’s still the water problem,” Kraintz said. “They’re still making a mess all over the river.”

You’ve heard the saying before: “Keep you friends close and your enemies closer!” And while you might hope that you only have people that love you and want the best for you in your circle, sometimes we can ignore the signs that we’ve got a friend who likes to bring negative energy or drama into our lives. They’re not outright trifling, instead, they just do a few things that make you scratch your head–like the following on this list. A frenemy doesn’t immediately need to be expunged from your life, but I would definitely keep an eye on them–or better yet, confront them about their sometimes shady behavior and see where you go from there.

Stingy with the “hookup”

And we’re not talking money (that is unless you loan them money all the time and they can’t do the same). The frenemy is actually stingy with resources and help that most friends wouldn’t mind offering. For instance, you have a colleague who is looking for an assistant, and you know that your friend, recently laid off or unhappy, is looking for a new opportunity. While it might not be your first thought, it should be a thought to hook your girl up with the contact, right? Well, the frenemy has all of that in her Barney bag but doesn’t feel like sharing. Sharing is caring! But a frenemy doesn’t want you to find yourself doing more or better than them. If you even have to ask if they can slide you someone’s email or to talk to someone who could help you get where you hope to be, then that should send off some warning signals and flares in your mind.

They need to know everything about you and only you…

The frenemy seems to be a private individual. When you find out things are going on in their life, you hear it from a third party or they tell you later than they tell everyone else and might even give an excuse as to why they did so in such a tardy manner. But the craziest thing of it is that they seem to feel the need to know everything that’s going on with you. Your success, your failure, who you’re “talking to,” and what you’re up to. What’s that about? Maybe it’s done to be critical, maybe they’re just nosey, or maybe, just maybe… they’re looking to one up you.

Mimic or try very hard to do better than you

Ever have that friend who seems to have an unspoken beef with everything you accomplish or do and wants to do the same or better? Yeah, girl, that’s probably a frenemy. Your “girlfriend” is on a some Single White Female doing-the-absolute-most-stuff and is trying to get the style you’ve got, the friends you made outside of her, and can’t seem to let you be happy basking in the realm of a major feat, relationship, or whatever, without trying to compare her success to your own. Seems like ‘ol girl isn’t trying to see you on top of the world, even if only for a few moments.

Lack of support emotionally

You know when you tell someone something that is really eating at you, and instead of seeming compassionate or having some deep, clutch advice for you when you need it, they have a random reaction you didn’t see coming? Whether it’s making you look irrational about your worries, blaming you for drama you didn’t think you caused or just being indifferent, the way they come at you is often puzzling. They don’t always have to sing “Lean on me” or something like that when you’re feeling down, but if they don’t seem to care for real (and you’re not one who complains all the time about everything), or they find some sort of entertainment or amusement out of your issues…I think we all know that’s not right.

Bad communication of course

You might have a frenemy on your hands if small disagreements turn into huge issues with her. I’m talking so huge in her mind that she stops talking to you for an extended period of time and starts talking bad about you to other people, possibly even to some of the friends in your circle. I think a strong friendship, like most relationships, thrives on good communication. And while you might have your ups and downs, you shouldn’t feel like a friend will throw you under the bus everytime they don’t get their way and talk about you behind your back whenever there’s a misunderstanding.

You realize the need to keep them at an arm’s length

While you have your friends that you confide in, call during dreary moments and check up on often, you might have a frenemy on your hands if she’s the one you like to hang out with just occasionally. In simple terms, you like to deal with her in small doses. She’s great to party with or shop with–you know, the fun surface stuff. But when it comes to trusting her with all the ins and outs of your issues, that’s not happening. She hasn’t proven herself to be the most down-to-ride girlfriend, but she’s cool in other ways. It’s like your party friends versus your real friends. You know who to call for a good time, but you also know who to call when you need someone to stand by you–NOT her.

They like to play with your feelings, but want to play sensitive too…

Think of the Sheree and Marlo Hampton fight on Real Housewives of Atlanta in a way (although we know they didn’t get along at all). A frenemy is good at leaving you out of the loop or not inviting you to certain things in the hope of being the center of attention with no problems. However, when they’re not the first person you think to call to go outfor dinner or to come to an event with you, their feelings get hurt! Talk about dramatic. How can you be picky in inviting a person to things and then have a conniption fit when they so something similar, but don’t do it out of spite like some folks? Yeah girl, keep an eye on that one. She’s crazy.

Chris Brown’s alleged new pick up line: ‘Promise I won’t beat you

Chris Brown has adopted a spine-chilling new pick up line, according to one report.

An unidentified woman tells Us Weekly that Brown alleged approached her in the 54th annual Grammy Awards gift lounge and said, “Can I get your number? I promise I won’t beat you!”

CHRIS BROWN SAYS ‘[BLEEP] OFF’ TO CRITICS

The woman elaborates that Brown thought the words were hilarious.

“He and his friends laughed,” she claims. “One yelled, ‘That’s his new line!’”

Naturally, the line didn’t go over well. The woman says that rather than being titillated, she “wanted to throw up.”

Brown’s rep, however, has dismissed the report. “I’d be surprised if Chris said something that stupid,” the rep said.

In 2009, Brown and then-girlfriend Rihanna had both been scheduled to perform at the Grammy Awards, but backed out last minute. It was later discovered that the two had gotten in a physical scuffle, which landed Rihanna in the hospital. Brown plead guilty to felony assault and was sentenced to six months of community service in addition to five years probation.

Yesterday, Brown unleashed and then later deleted a Twitter tirade against critics who say he shouldn’t have been awarded a Grammy this year because of the incident.

“You guys love to hate!!!” he wrote. “But guess what??? HATE ALL U WANT BECUZ I GOT A GRAMMY Now!”

Sources later told Radar Online that Brown didn’t write the tweets himself.

“Brown didn’t Tweet that,” the source claimed. “Someone does his postings to Twitter and when he saw that he ordered it taken down immediately.”

Married newcomers to Canada better be in love or be prepared tough it out in the relationship for two years if they don’t want to be kicked out of the country.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada is changing Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations to make a sponsored spouse stay in the relationship for at least two years once they receive permanent residence status, or they have to leave Canada. “For two years, you have to stay married,” said Winnipeg Liberal MP Kevin Lamoureux, who heard the news on Valentine’s Day as a member of the standing committee on Citizenship and Immigration.

The government is bringing into force regulatory changes to deter marriage fraud, he said. It will impose a two-year “conditional residency” on sponsored spouses, common-law partners and conjugal partners.

If they don’t stay in a bona fide relationship, they’ll be removed by the Canada Border Services Agency, he said. Jilted spouses may be happy to see them get the heave-ho but victims of violent spouses could be in jeopardy, critics say. “This is just dangerous,” said Lamoureux. “The most vulnerable are those coming to Canada not knowing a soul.”

Newcomer and women’s advocates worry that the rule will make it more difficult for people to escape abusive relationships. Ten per cent of the abused women who seek shelter at Osborne House in Winnipeg are newcomers to Canada, said Barbara Judt, executive director. “We see it all the time,” Judt said Wednesday. “Women are brought over — maybe through an arranged marriage — and literally, they’re a prisoner in their own home.

They can’t go to the community — they hardly know the community,” she said “Fortunately, they end up at our door.” Judt wants to know what immigration officials will do when a spouse who’s been abused comes forward. “We need more clarification on that,” she said. “People working in the shelter need a better understanding for when we go to advocate on (a woman’s behalf)

.”The government is developing a process for allowing spouses to come forward without facing enforcement action but those and other details haven’t been worked out, said Lamoureux. Getting married to emigrate is against the rules and difficult to prove, Citizenship and Immigration said when it first proposed regulatory changes in March.

It needed to do more “to deter individuals who might otherwise use a marriage of convenience to circumvent our immigration laws, and to protect the integrity of our immigration system,” the department said in the Canada Gazette. “It forces women to stay in a violent or abusive relationship for fear they could be deported if they don’t do what their spouse says,” said Winnipeg’s Wanda Yamamoto, president of the Canadian Council for Refugees and executive director of Welcome Place.

“They have that threat hanging over them.” She said she’s not sure how the federal government will be able to work around the new regulations when an abused spouse leaves a marriage. “The problem is, especially when they’re sponsored through family class, some of that information doesn’t get to family members,” Yamamoto said. “They don’t know who they can trust — will it get back to their husband?” There are people who marry to get into Canada but, Yamamoto said, “it’s very sporadic.” She wants the federal government to provide some data if it’s taking such steps.

The Citizenship and Immigration Department says “firm figures” on the extent of marriage fraud are not available. Of the 46,300 immigration applications for spouses and partners processed in 2010, close to 16 per cent were refused for different reasons — “many” on the basis of evidence that the relationship was not bona fide.
