Reno the biggest little city in the world ,was once the gaming capitol of the United States, that was nearly sixty years ago. Las Vegas built the larger casinos, its convention center is one of the largest in the US. In 1976, New Jersey Voters Approved Gambling in Atlantic City. Finally, Indian gaming in California.
There are many old timers who feel city leaders hurt the city in 1965 when the convention center was built several miles from the downtown hotels.
Hotels started closing well before the ressesion. Kings Inn closed in the 80’s. Most of the smaller casinos are closed downtown, even Fitzgerald’s at the world famous Reno Arch is closed.
Hot Augusts Nights is the cities most popular event it represents millions to the community.
There are many rumors of late. The events leader Bruce Walter was quoted by a southern California paper saying that this would be the last year the event would be held in Reno and that a six year contract was signed with the City of Long Beach.
Bruce Walter said he was misquoted, and the event was not leaving the area. The city, which has held the event every year since its inception in 1986 is nervous. Mr Walter is moving out of his Reno home. He has a condo in Reno and is looking for home in southern California.
