A man who walked into a Kmart with his 6-year-old son was arrested after allegedly trying to steal video game controllers, then attempting to slash and stab employees before leaving his son behind, police said.
Dominick Chavis, 25, was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and endangering a child.
Police said the man arrived at the store on East Mariposa Road at 11:35 a.m. Saturday. He allegedly tried to take game controllers and was confronted by workers, officers said.
He then reportedly took out a knife resembling a box cutter and tried to slash employees as he fled, leaving the child behind, police said.
Officers learned the man went to an empty apartment on Farmington Road not far from the store. When they entered the apartment, he jumped out the back window, where other officers waiting outside arrested him.
Chavis was held Saturday afternoon at the San Joaquin County Jail in lieu of $128,000 bail.
