I know who RuPaul is…… I knew he had a television show on cable. The end, slow fade.
My daughter’s girlfriend is a HUGE fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race. New Years day we watched the show for hours.
Drag Race is much like “America’s Next Top Model” filled with drama and venom with one exception.
As a child, I heard my older brother and uncles talk about this place in the city where the men looked like women. The went on about the illusion(they couldn’t be men) They like watching the reactions of the visitors,so anyone who visiting was taken to Finocchio’s
The assumption is, if he wears women’s clothing he’s gay. While most of the performers were gay, there were quite a few heterosexuals, performers who enjoyed performing as a woman. A lot of the business was referrals, my brother and his wife took our cousin from Portland and his wife, they in turn introduced people to Finocchio’s. For decades, tour buses filled with unsuspecting tourists would line Broadway in San Francisco.
A zillion years ago when I was a bank teller at American Savings on Market and Kearny, I flirted with an older Filipino women, this went on for weeks, I looked forward to flirting with her, one day she asked me, if I thought her voice was too low? and in my early twenty something swag, I told her,” no it was sexy” every Tuesday I cashed her check . One day I noticed the check was from Finocchio’s ,(Yikes-shock it to me!) from that day on, when ever I saw her in line, I closed my window and went in back.
My wife and I visited Finocchio’s in 90’s, the shows where very tasteful and the routines dated, unlike many of the drag shows today, many of the performers actually sang. Many of the performers worked in the club for decades. By the 90’s fewer tourist where visiting Broadway and North Beach, most of the famous night clubs are now sex clubs, porno shops and strip clubs.Finocchio’s officially closed in 1999.
A few years ago, I was invited to a drag show at Faces,(who knew) the place was packed with women, I think I was one of five men in the packed room. Not knowing what to expect, I had a great time. The Drag Queens worked every inch of the stage, they came in every shape and size and unlike the drag race, no one lost a wig
What is it about Drag Queens and women?
This weekend, the ladies have an new inductee. My sister,(the ultimate church lady) who thinks RuPaul l is one of the most beautiful women ever. She prefers him in drag.
My favorite part of the show is when they get down to the last two ladies… Who must face off in a lip syncing contest. Then she announces in a very dramatic tone “You are Lip syncing for your life “” don’t fuck it up”
I sometimes wonder if my daughters girlfriend is a member of some RuPaul Cult, in my birthday bag was Season 3 and yes I a fan..
