Jordan Davis another 17,unarmed black teenager in Florida killed. Echos of Travon Martin

Like Travon Martin he was 17 when he was killed.  Like Travon Martin he was unarmed and like Travon Martin, the killer said he was in fear of his life.  That’s where the similarities end.

Today 17 year old Jordan Davis was laid to rest today at his mother church in Powder Springs, Ga.

His life ended on Friday, Nov 23rd  at the Gate gas station parking lot on Southside Boulevard and Baymeadows Road in Jacksonville Florida.

Unlike Travon Martin there was  witnesses who wrote down the licence plate number of Michael David Dunn’s Volkswagen.  Unlike Travon, there wasn’t a fight or a scuffle.

On Friday, November 23rd Mr Dunn stopped at the gas station with his girlfriend after going to his son’s wedding.  He pulled up along side The Red Dodge Durango, occupied by Davis and three other young men.   His girlfriend went into the store.

Mr Dunn told Mr Davis who was sitting in the back seat to turn the music down.  Dunn exchanged words with Davis, who was in the back seat, and started firing.

Dunn fired eight or nine shots into the car and Davis was hit a couple of times, police said. Dunn’s girlfriend ran outside.

“When she came out, she said, What's going on?' and supposedly his statement was,I just fired at these kids,'” Jacksonville Sheriff’s Lt. Rob Schoonover said. said. “At that time I don’t know if he knew that he struck anyone in the vehicle.”

Dunn and his girlfriend drove off and spent the night at a hotel.

Dunn was arrested a day later at his home in Satellite Beach, about 160 miles away, when police tracked his license plate.   He told detectives he had been in the process of turning himself in to a neighbor, who was in law enforcement.

Dunn insists that he saw a gun inside the SUV and shot in self-defense.  No gun was found.

The gun could help Mr Dunn, who said he was in fear of his life.   Florida’s notorious “Stand you Ground law”

Dunn is vice president of Dunn & Dunn Data Systems in Vero Beach

From the outset this is clearly manslaughter, however his attorneys seems to be looking for away to use the states  Stand Your Ground Law.

The Stand your Ground law, that allows citizens to shoot, when they feel threatened.  Makes the state an unsafe place to travel    Especially if you’re a person of color.
