Its a Shaqworld After All

I love Sacramento, I love the people here and its quiet beauty.  However when a celebrity comes to town the people lose their minds.

San Franciscans and New Yonkers are used to celebrities and celebrities can walk the streets without fear of large groups of fans following. You know they’re there but you keep your distance.  I’ve ridden the 38 Geary bus with Robin Williams ,drank coffee and talked about the Giants  with the late Joe Dimaggo at Hunts Donuts on Chestnut Street in San Francisco

Celebrity sighting are rare in Sacramento.  Were more like Mayberry than San Fran. With Aunt Bee, Gomer, Barney Fife trying to appear nonchalant as they follow Paris Hilton down J street.

A couple of years the city was turned on its side after Prince was spotted eating at the Tower Cafe. He was in town visiting friends.  There were Purple sightings all over town.  One of the radio stations contributed to the delinquency of Prince fans encouraging them to call if the saw anyone at all who resembled him.

Shaquille O’Neal  is now one of the owners of the Sacramento Kings.  In less than 24 hours he has become the Savior of all things Sacramento .   According to the Sac Bee he will bring the team a Shaq-sized helping of publicity and glitter, and one that could influence the looming ballot-box fight over a proposed new arena in downtown Sacramento.

Huh? Twenty thousand people will look into his big brown eyes and fall to their collective feet and say “WE FAILED YOU SIRE” let’s find those evil petitioners and get our names off that list.

Meanwhile on the telly, It’s Shaq-0-mania  he will make your whites bright, fix your digestion and make that Rambler run like new.    Tourist will pack our hotels hoping for a Shaq-O-dellic encounter, transforming Sacramento into an international destination. who needs Paris, we have Shaq.

Shaq is caught up in the Hype. He’s gonna make Sacramento a global brand and has renamed the city Shaqramento  (someone likes himself)

For some Kings fans ,Shaq is whack,  as they still remembers the references ….CowTown, Sacramento Queens and no amount of new owner apologies will erase those comments.

As a Kings fan, I am happy the Maloofs are gone.  Despite their love and passion for the team, they simply did not have the deep pockets needed to develop the Team.   Like many fans, I hope the new owners will develop a team that will attract talent.

The new owners Vivek Ranadive, Mark Mastrov, Raj Bhathal, have confess their love for Sacramento, What would be impressive iif these Gentlemen moved themselves and their operations to the city.

Hey, Shaq you could get one of the Lofts on L street with those high ceilings .

With feet firmly planted on the ground, Shaq’s  celebrity might attract other celebrities to the games. However  even his notable celebrity can’t hide the absence of consistent talent on the floor.

His charisma  isn’t likely to attract intentional companies or erase the reality city leaders desire to have an Arena in downtown plaza could have an negative effect on the citizens of Sacramento for 35 years or more.

With the Government Shut Down six days away, and Syria quiet . I predict  Shaqnews, Shaqsightings and talk of the ShagKings for the rest of the week in Sac.

Moved to the Big Tomata in the nineties from San Francisco. No Suburbs for me with its single colored houses and lawns and the excitement of pulling out my trash can once a week. I'm a CityFella , a part time New Yorker. I'm happiest in the Center City where people the streets and people are alive. I'm still waiting to buy a 34th floor condo somewhere downtown/Midtown with a nightclub. "Hurry I'm old" My politics are somewhere in the middle with a needle that constantly moves. I'm too liberal to be a Republican and too conservative to be a Democrat. Everything interests me . I've come to love Sacratomato, Its a nice town in cheap sensible shoes .
