Bill Cosby America’s Dad: Is Silence Golden?

By CityFella

If your over 40 years old ,your probaley not familiar with the  Australian born rapper/singer Izzy Azalea.  She is the current “IT” girl and newest celebrity.   Fame is what she wanted, what she is rapidly learning is the price of fame, her privacy.  In the you tube video she simply wanted eggs.

There are now hundreds of stories beyond her reach some of the stories are true, many are untrue, being soaked up by people who wants to know her.

She is news.   News outlets want to know everything  “Izzy” family members, people she knows or never knew are selling  information to  the tabloids, some outlets will verify the information  others will printed word for word.

Rumors, allegations of misdeeds is part of celebrity.  A casual bump in a crowded room could result in a  lawsuit.   Paying  someone off could open the flood gate to other lawsuits.   Media outlets  profit from erroneous stories.

In California, a law specifies that a “Newspaper” is protected from all non-economic damages for  libel  if it publishes a  retraction equally conspicuous to the original offending article.

Bill Cosby has been famous for more than 50 years.  There has been hundred of allegations about him, from cheating to racketeering .

In July 1997, he testified that he made private payments to Shawn Upshaw, a woman who had briefly been his lover in Las Vegas during the early 1970s. Upshaw later told Cosby that he was the father of her daughter, Autumn Jackson. Cosby denies being the father and said that he gave Upshaw a total of about $100,000 because he did not want her to publicly reveal the affair. Twenty-two-year-old Autumn Jackson was sentenced to 26 months in jail for trying to extort $40 million from Cosby.

Drugging, Groping and Rape

In the last few weeks several women have come forward and said Cosby has drugged, raped or groped them.  With the last one being model actress Janice Dickerson.     Of all the women only, Andrea Constand, the former director of operations for the Temple University women’s basketball team, filed a lawsuit against Cosby, alleging that he drugged and molested her at his home in Pennsylvania in 2004.

A local prosecutor had declined to file charges related to the alleged abuse. After Constand’s accusations become public, a second woman, Tamara Green (She was interviewed on the Today Show in 2005),that in the 1970s, Cosby gave her pills that knocked her unconscious and then groped her. Court papers in the Constand case mention Green and 12 anonymous women who make similar allegations against the actor and comic. Cosby denies ever molesting any of the women. Cosby settled the lawsuit out of court. The terms were not disclosed.

These allegations go back years why is it news Today?

In Febuary, Gawker Com, wrote an article titled :Who Wants to Remember Bill Cosby’s Multiple Sex-Assault Allegations?    A few weeks later  Newsweek interviewed Barbara Bowman   “Barbara Bowman Speaks About Bill Cosby Sexual Abuse Allegations”

In September, the book about Cosby: His Life and Times is released.  The author, Mark Whittaker was asked why didn’t he include the rape Allegations?

Whitaker later said in a statement, “I was aware of the allegations, but ultimately decided not to include them in my book. I didn’t want to print allegations that I couldn’t confirm independently… there were no independent witnesses and no definitive court findings, which did not meet my journalistic or legal standard for including in the biography.”

Last month ,Comedian Hannibal Buress repeatedly calls Cosby a rapist during a show in Philadelphia. A clip of Burress’ standup bit goes viral.

Last week, the Washington Post published Barbara Bowman’s “Bill Cosby raped me. Why did it take 30 years for people to believe my Story?

What about his Friends, Supporters?

It’s difficult.  Bill Cosby is an icon.  What if one of the stories where true? After all quite a few women did come forward.   I think Whoopi Goldberg said it best on The View a few days ago. She wondered why one woman who came forward did not go to the police or hospital after the alleged assaults. Of the settlement reached with Andrea Constand, the original accuser, Goldberg said, “Settlements don’t necessarily mean you’re guilty. You generally settle because you don’t want to put your family through it again…I’m going to reserve my judgement. I have a lot of questions.”    Goldberg has had her days in court, she knows of what she speaks .

Is Silence Golden?

This isn’t the best week for America’s Dad.   He has been dropped by NBC, Netflix and the Cosby Show reruns are on pause on TVLand.    The Press the public wants to hear from him.  The problem is what ever he says will be questioned.   An error, will require a correction, and possibly another correction and debate.   The statute of limitation has long passed.   Bill Cosby is 77 years old and has an estimated net worth of 350 million dollars.  He works at his pleasure.  As a fan, I hope the allegations are false.  I’m am reminded of something I heard years ago.  It take a lifetime to build a reputation and a minute to destroy it.

Moved to the Big Tomata in the nineties from San Francisco. No Suburbs for me with its single colored houses and lawns and the excitement of pulling out my trash can once a week. I'm a CityFella , a part time New Yorker. I'm happiest in the Center City where people the streets and people are alive. I'm still waiting to buy a 34th floor condo somewhere downtown/Midtown with a nightclub. "Hurry I'm old" My politics are somewhere in the middle with a needle that constantly moves. I'm too liberal to be a Republican and too conservative to be a Democrat. Everything interests me . I've come to love Sacratomato, Its a nice town in cheap sensible shoes .
