Ten Days of Dolly Pardon (8) “I will Always Love you”


When Dolly was 22,musician and country music entertainer Porter Wagoner invited Parton to join his organization, offering her a regular spot on his weekly syndicated  television program The Porter Wagoner Show, and in his road show. It was Wagoner who convinced his label “RCA” to offer Dolly a contract. The duo had many successful hits. Dolly’s Jolene (1973) was her biggest solo hit to date. Dolly attributed most of her success to Wagoner. Longing for a solo career and made the decision to leave the Porter Wagoner and was heartbroken.

Her song “I will always love you” was about her professional break with Porter Wagoner.  Elvis Presley indicated that he wanted to record the song. Parton was interested until Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker , told her that it was standard procedure for the songwriter to sign over half of the publishing rights to any song recorded by Presley.  Dolly refused .

Dolly’s version of “I will always love you reached number one three times , in 1974 and in 1982. In 1992 Whitney Houston recorded the song for the soundtrack of the film ” The Bodyguard ” Houston version was number one for 14 weeks. The song has generated millions $$$$ imagine if she signed half the rights to Elvis? Dolly maybe a blonde………………
